Succulent Pots: A Home for Your Succs

You see all these pictures of succulents in teacups, succulents hanging out in little glass orbs, succulents in all sorts of different containers...but which one is the best for you and your succulent?

Here are some of my newest succulent acquisitions!

What kind of pot should you use?
It depends on how experienced you are. More experienced succulent growers can get away with no drainage holes if they know not to overwater their plant. Overwatering can cause water to collect in the bottom of the container and grow nasty mold and pathogens that are unhealthy for your plant! That being said, the best kind of succulent pot or planter is one with a hole in the bottom. You need at least one drainage hole, the more the merrier. Remember, these succulents are native to dry, arid deserts where rain doesn't fall every day and night. If there aren't drainage holes, the soil stays wetter longer, and can cause root rot and succulent death. Oh my!

However, for the succulent photographer and the determined succulent growers, a no drainage container can still work. Here's how: water rarely, just a few drops with a dropper bottle or a spray bottle (don't wet the leaves, wet the soil!) Let the soil completely dry out before the next watering and you should be fine! Some people even have a layer of small pebbles at the bottom of their pot to keep the roots off the bottom where water collects. This helps prevent root rot and promote the longevity of your plant!
